Christmas and Chinese New Year
New Zealand Christmas and Chinese New Year have some things in common. They are both the most important celebrations of the year and they are both holidays. At both celebrations families and friends get together for special meals.
Some things are different. NZ Christmas is on the 25th December every year. People give and receive presents. Lots of towns have Santa parades.
The Chinese New Year takes place in January or February. They celebrate to bring good luck and to welcome the new year. People celebrate by holding lanterns and they give children lucky money in red envelopes. They also dress up and dance in the streets.

Chinese Shadow Puppets
1.How is it made? The puppets are very delicate items and normally made from donkey or oxen skin. You can also cut – out designs and translucent dyes. They’re usually really thin so that colures and the outline are displayed on a screen.
2. History – 2000 years ago Wu Emperor of the han Dynasty was so upset by the death of a woman, he wanted to step down. The Emperors servant had an idea to cheer him up from seeing children playing with dolls and shadows. Firstly shadow puppets were made out of paper sculpture, but later they used donkey and oxen skin. That’s why they call it piying, which means shadows of hides.
3. How is it used? By curtains and people making shadows with a light behind them.
